4 FAQ About Car Window Tinting

A Guide to Car Window Tinting

Car window tinting is an investment worth considering. The transparent film prevents ultraviolet (UV) rays from seeping into the car, damaging your skin and fading the upholstery. The material also works like sunglasses for your car to help avoid blinding glares that make driving safely difficult. If you plan to install this feature on your vehicle, here's what you can expect.

What type of tint can I install?

The requirements for car window tinting vary by state. In Hawaii, the film on a sedan's rear, back, and front windows must allow more than 35% of light to filter into the cabin. A motorist can also install a nonreflective tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield. On the other hand, the film on SUVs and vans' back side and rear windows can be any level of darkness.

How is it installed?

First, technicians will wash the windows so that the film adheres to a clean surface. Installers will cut the material and then spray the glass with a solution to help the tint stick to it. After placing the layer, technicians will go over the surface with a squeegee to remove excess solution from the edges, avoiding bubbling. They'll then trim the edges so the film is the exact window measurements.

Cure time will depend on how long it takes for the solution to dry, but it usually lasts for a few days. Weather can also affect this time frame, as a hotter climate will speed up the process. While the tint cures, you might notice streaks or cloudiness on the windows that will eventually go away.

How can I clean the windows?

To give the tint enough time to cure, wait a week before cleaning the windows. Avoid using cleaners containing ammonia or abrasives, as the chemicals and sharp particles can damage your investment.

Maintain the film by opting for milder solutions, such as soap and water or vinegar-based products. Wipe the windows down with a soft towel before washing them with the cleaner.

How durable is it?

In addition to its ability to keep out UV light, car tint film is lauded for its durability. The membrane has scratch-resistant coatings to protect the glass underneath. If windows shatter in an accident, the film will contain the shards to prevent injuries.
